Denise Richards recently opened up about a phobia that sometimes tends to get so bad that it interferes with her life.
Former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Denise Richards has a phobia and it sometimes affects her life. For the sake of an instance, this phobia stopped her from attending an American Idol taping.
In her book entitled, The Real Girl Next Door, Richards reveals that she has emetophobia – which alludes to the fear of vomiting. The Wild Things star the phobia triggered when she was a kid, but became a challenge later in her life when she became pregnant with her daughters and she had to tend to ailing children.
Her late mother explained how Denise got to the point where she began getting anxious around vomit. When she was in her early 20s, her mom explained that as a kid, she followed her father into the bathroom when he was sick and saw him vomit, Richards wrote.
Watching him puke made her think her father was dying, and it affected the rest of her life. “It pisses me off that something I don’t even remember has had such an impact on me, but it has, and my phobia, formally known as emetophobia, presented a unique challenge during my first trimester,” she added.
When she was going through a tough time in her life, her friends thought she needed a distraction, and urged her to attend the American Idol finale. In addition to going through a difficult divorce from Charlie Sheen, Richards was worried about her mother who was dying from cancer at the time, so she agreed to spend time with her friends.
She called Ryan Seacrest, who arrange seats for her and her friends at the Kodak Theatre, but on her way to the theater, Richards was hit by a wave of nausea. As she passed through security at the theater, her fear of throwing up became a reality.
Putting her hand over her mouth, Richards threw up in a trash can she found in the corner, the actress recalled. She was embarrassed and had to be assisted by a nurse on the set, but she vomited once more. Although she tried to sit through the American Idol finale, Richards decided to go home even before the show started.
“I said hello to the Idol judges, Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson. I also waved to Ryan. However, soon after the show started, I began to feel anxious again. The queasiness returned to my stomach. Then I panicked,” she described her experience. The slim possibility of her vomiting again with thirty million people watching was enough for her to bid a hasty good-bye to her friends and go home.
