Kourtney Kardashian: The Kardashians continue to stay in the public eye after announcing they’d be pulling the plug over Keeping Up With the Kardashians next year.
While the announcement was hardly surprising considering the show has been circling the drain for quite some time now, the burning question on the minds of KUWTK fans was how would they stay relevant on social media? Apparently, the family will continue sparking rumors and stirring conversations among their followers by making controversial statements.
Keeping in line with that, Kourtney Kardashian, 41, received backlash for an Instagram Story that raised questions about the safety of using blue face masks. In her post, the Poosh founder promoted a conspiracy theory that suggests the PTFE material in blue surgical-style masks causes cancer.
The post, shared with her 102 million Instagram followers, was allegedly based on information from the American Cancer Society’s site, cancer.org. The organization says there is no evidence that supports that claim.
“There is no evidence to support the claim that the presence of PTFE in a mask causes cancer,” the ACS’s chief medical and scientific officer Dr. William Cance told the New York Post. Cance noted that as a surgical oncologist, he, as well as thousands of colleagues associated with the health-care profession, have been wearing masks for a long time to protect patients from the spread of infections.
Kourtney’s post suggested that the blue masks mandated at airplanes and grocery stores are made using PTFE, which is a carcinogen made of synthetic fluoride. Citing Cancer.Org, she went on to claim that PTFE increases the risk of high cholesterol, preeclampsia, thyroid disease, liver, testicle, pancreas, kidney, and breast tumors + ulcerative colitis.
She added that high exposure to the substance causes hemorrhaging in the lungs, leading to suffocation, as well as influenza-like symptoms. She added wide-eyed and mind-blown emojis to her post. As expected, the post garnered severe criticism from her followers.
Some of her followers even pointed out how staff on Kim Kardashian’s birthday bash were wearing masks. PTFE can only be harmful if it is heated to 260 degrees Celcius, as it releases fumes in this situation.
